Held
2001

Held is a 2-channel sound installation that utilizes a real time recording of the artist inhaling, holding his breath, then exhaling, repeated for 20 minutes. The recording emphasizes the time between breaths and thus consists mostly of suspended time, with low frequency rumblings and fidgeting. The raw loudspeakers are attached in a symmetrical arrangement to glass surfaces with suction cups, emphasizing their doubled images. Being raw loudspeakers, they do not emit audible low frequencies, but visibly quiver between breaths because the low frequencies cause their cones to vibrate.
